Microsoft Finance Manager – As I mentioned in a recent post, I recently switched back to Microsoft Identity Manager. The focus of this post is some recent development I did to build a Microsoft Dynamics 365 Financial and Operations Management Agent for Microsoft Identity Manager. Since this was a custom development, I used my favorite extended management agent, the Granfeldt PowerShell Management Agent.

Out of the gate there was a caveat on how to integrate with Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations. Having no previous experience with Dynamics 365, I did not know the different products and their legacy. Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations is a rebrand of Dynamics AX. My initial misconception was that I could use the Microsoft Graph Financials API to access the data I needed. No, the Microsoft Graph Financials API is for Dynamics 365 Business Central.

With the new realization that I couldn’t use Microsoft Graph to get what I needed, I started working on how to access employee data from Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations. In response, the Open Data Protocol (OData) was used. For authentication, the prescribed method is Azure Active Directory.

The final step was to implement Dynamics 365 for Financial Entities and Operations which contained the data I needed to bring employees into Microsoft Identity Manager. I started writing some functions to query Dynamics 365 when I realized that with the many entities I needed, I was hoping / hoping someone was already in this position. A few searches in the PowerShell gallery later and I found the d365fo.integrations module. Many thanks to Mötz Jensen for that.

Mötz suggests that changes to ODATA API endpoints can lead to garbled responses (HTTP 429). Make sure you have the latest d365fo.integrations module.

Using the Azure portal, you will need to register an Azure AD application and generate a client secret for it. Record the Tenant ID, Application ID (Client ID), and Client Secret values. That’s all we need from Azure AD since we’ll be using it for authentication, but the resource we’ll be accessing is the Dynamics 365 for Finance & Operations OData API.

From the Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations app configuration => Setup => Azure Active Directory app configuration provide the client ID to the AAD enrollment request you created above. And provide a name for the integration and a Dynamics 365 account with the necessary ODATA API permissions for the entities you will retrieve. In my implementation I needed access to the following Dynamics 365 Entities.

In this example I am documenting reading data from Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations. As mentioned in the prerequisites, the Dynamics 365 entities I needed to access were Workers, Jobs, Employment and DepartmentsV2.

Using the d365fo.integrations module, you can easily authenticate to Azure AD and obtain an authorization access token to your Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations tenant. Install the module from the PowerShell gallery in an Admin PowerShell session on your MIM for synchronization on the server using the following command.

We can use the Get-D365ODataPublicEntity cmdlet to find entities based on naming. for example to find entities containing “Employees” will return the following.

PSMA will then make extensive use of the Get-D365ODataEntityData cmdlet with the -TraverseNextLink switch to return all entity results.

As I worked through accessing the necessary data I needed to pull MIM from Dynamics 365, I was blindsided at first. A few entity names were thrown at me and I had to figure it out on my own. Once there, I had to educate others, so I put together this relationship diagram. Bold references indicate relationships between entities. The highlighted green attributes show where the values ​​for the PSMA ‘face’ object class will come from.

To help understand the sample import script below, here is a process flow for it. Calling this flow when parsing the import script will help you understand it quickly.

Here is a sample PSMA Import Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations script. Update line 12 for your Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations tenant URL, line 14 for your Azure AD tenant ID. If you are using the latest Granfeldt PSMA, you can put these items in the new PSMA Configuration property. This MA was developed prior to publication.

On a synchronized MIM server with PSMA Granfeldt installed, copy the schema, import and your empty password and export scripts to the appropriate directory. Create a new PowerShell management agent and on the connection configuration page enter the client ID of the registered Azure AD application for username. Enter the registered Azure AD client secret for the password prompt. In this example I am not using Paged Imports. You can configure that if you want by updating the import script based on this example.

Configure each page of the Management Agent configuration as required for your environment and application. Create Run Profiles for Import and Sync according to your standards and run them. The Managing Agent Department.
