Average compensation for most first-year investment banking analysts is between $170,000 and $190,000.
Is A Finance Degree Worth It? 5 Benefits To Consider
The table below summarizes the average compensation of 1st year, 2nd year and increasingly rare 3rd year analysts.
Traditionally, investment banking analysts receive their first annual bonus a full 12 months after arrival and do not progress to a calendar year bonus until they are promoted to associate (“a to a”).
However, firms are moving to a “stub year” model for IB analysts to return their bonuses by the end of the calendar year in December. In this case, analysts receive a “small” stub at the end of the first calendar year (typically $30,000-$35,000 just 5 months after arrival), with the next bonus coming 12 months later.
As in the US, there is a standard base: in London, almost all firms now offer a base of £60,000, rising to £65,000 and £70,000 for 2nd and 3rd year analysts respectively.
Is A Financial Analyst A Hard Job?
In smaller European financial centers such as Switzerland, Frankfurt and Zurich, wages are comparable to London after adjusting from GBP to EUR.
Top performers receive 100% of their base as a bonus (and in some rare cases 105% of base), while the weakest analysts receive 70% of base pay at most companies.
At many companies, being at the bottom of the group is also a very subtle indicator that it won’t get you a promotion down the road.
How analysts rank relative to others in the group—how they rank relative to other groups or other firms—is therefore the most important indicator of career prospects within a firm.
What Financial Analyst Do?
Investment banks organize their groups primarily by industry (coverage) and compete with other firms based on the number of deals they do in each industry.
If the analyst belongs to an industry group that has done many deals and generated significant income for the bank, the bonus fund for this group will be larger than for less successful groups.
At the end of each year, investment banks set aside a percentage of the profits generated by the firm to compensate employees.
Not all investment banks are the same – a select few work on multi-billion dollar deals and have a presence at major global financial institutions (such as Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley and JP Morgan).
Technical Skills Financial Analysts Need To Master
Others, so-called elite boutiques, work on equally large deals but focus exclusively on investment banking M&A advice (eg Evercore, Lazard and Guggenheim).
Finally, others are aimed at the middle market. Although you can slice them in different ways, compensation is generally well defined at most “elite” companies:
As banks try to keep more analysts who opt for private equity (despite a more relaxed dress code), fewer analysts are staying in their second year, let alone their third.
Johnson Associates, a compensation consulting firm, expects year-end incentives (aka bonuses) to rise to the highest level since the Great Recession of 2008 as the financial services industry benefits from an increase in deal volume.
What Do Finance Jobs Pay? 20 Best Paying Careers In 2022
In 2021, Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan are each preparing to pay their investment bankers big bonuses, with almost all investment banks following suit.
For example, Goldman Sachs is expected to raise the base salary for its entry-level investment banking analysts from $85,000 to $110,000.
Hence, along with increasing the base salary, Best Banks are focusing on creating a ‘pay for performance’ culture.
