Across the store, we’re creating small teams of associates who will be cross-trained and given ownership of the work and their area for everything from inventory to visual standards. This means they will gain more skills and be able to support co-workers who want to take time off or just need extra help during a full shift. For example, associates who prepare fresh food will be trained to maintain prices and standards in their field – giving them broader skills that allow them to help customers and develop their own careers.
To manage the new teams, we introduced new forward-looking leadership roles in our Supercenters, both at salary and hourly levels: Store Manager (former Co-Manager), Trainer (former Assistant Manager) and Team Leader (former Department Manager). The new positions will develop their teams, deliver on our strategic priorities and be responsible for empowering our more than one million associates as they take on greater roles in the business – something they have proven more than capable of during this pandemic.

When we tested this team approach, co-workers gravitated to the connection and camaraderie that comes with being part of a small team that supports each other and works together toward common goals.
When we implement these changes, all associates can continue to work at Walmart if they choose, even if they are not selected for one of the new roles. They will either remain in their current roles or be offered a similar position. They will keep the same salary until at least October 2021. We are committed to taking care of our associates during this unprecedented time, and in return we take care of our customers.

We also invest in the salaries of associates. The new structure is built around the highly skilled jobs of the future, and the compensation for these roles reflects this.
The new hourly paid lead roles will be paid more, and we are also increasing the pay for the current paid roles of Assistant Digital Center Manager, Asset Protection and In-Store Car Care. The new hourly pay ranges for team leader roles start between $18 and $21 per hour and can go up to $30 per hour at Supercenters. Through this new, tiered structure for team leaders, we are creating room for salary and career growth as we invest in areas like pickup and delivery, as customers increasingly turn to these options. Those parts of the business will only continue to grow.
In addition, we invest in specific, qualified first hourly positions in supercenters. The minimum for hourly associates in delis and bakeries increases from $11 an hour to $15 or more. Wages are also increasing for some hourly roles in car care centers. Most associates in these roles will receive a base salary increase of $1 or more per hour. These specialized roles are an essential part of our business.
We are reinvesting in several ways to provide associates with a higher and more consistent base salary. All of the above employees will receive a raise in October, instead of the annual raise they usually have to wait until February or April to receive it. Likewise, for the selected hourly roles, the increase will also take the place of a regular quarterly bonus and become part of their base salary going forward, offering more predictability and higher pay in their hourly wages. The associates will continue to be entitled to quarterly bonuses for the third and fourth quarters of the year. When we asked co-workers, the vast majority say their hourly wages are the most important part of their pay, far ahead of their quarterly bonuses.
